1940 Redware Glazed Slip Decorated Deep Plate Made by Thomas Stahl

Description: A beautiful and rather unusual in color and design glazed redware small deep plate. The glazed plate has a beautiful shiny brown coloring with lighter brown, or possibly brownish-yellow slip decoration consisting of wavy lines ad dots on the inside. The brown coloring of the inside shows fine mottling of darker brown spots. The plate is round with a flat base rising with rounded sides to a plain wide rim. The plate, which is ~6 5/8" in diameter, is glazed on the inside but not on the outside. It retains the color of unglazed redware on the outside and the bottom. It is marked as to the maker and the date the piece was made on the bottom of the plate. The base is incised by the potter and has the words "Made In Stahl's Pottery By Thomas Stahl April 25, 1940" in 6 lines. Date: April 25, 1940 

Origin: Powder Valley, Pennsylvania 

Size: Measures ~6 5/8" diameter at the top and is ~1 3/8" high. The piece is rather substantial and weighs about 13 ounces. 

Maker: Thomas Stahl 

Marks: Hand written on the bottom "Made In Stahl's Pottery By Thomas Stahl April 25, 1940" in 6 lines, all in hand written in cursive calligraphy. 

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice unusual and rare piece made by a master potter from Pennsylvania. 

Condition: The plate is in excellent condition with no cracks, hairlines, chips, or repairs. It does have general crazing to the glaze throughout. The piece has a small scuff mark on the glazed inside which is difficult to see but are there. Finally, the piece also has some of the normal defects you would expect in a piece of primitive pottery of this type such as spots where the glaze did not fully flow, pops, slubs, and surface roughness.
